Do You Encourage Visitors to Comment on Your Blog

One of the great benefits of maintaining a blog is the interactivity you can have with your visitors. Instead of people just coming and reading about your business, a blog offers the opportunity for them to communicate with you or to start a discussion. People visiting your blog also want to see that others have been there. Seeing comments on a blog proves that people are actually reading the posts, so they add credibility to your blog.

The problem arises when your blog is new. People are more willing to post comments on a site where many other people are also commenting. Getting people to start commenting proves to be quite a challenge. Here are 4 ways to encourage your visitors to share their opinions, ask questions, or start discussions on your blog.

1. Write about something controversial

One of the quickest ways to get attention is to write about a topic where people have a strong opinion. If you have a different opinion than most about a certain topic, you will grab their attention. Oftentimes, your visitors will have to comment. They will not be able to help themselves from offering their converse opinion.

You do need to be careful not to give a negative impression to your visitors. Remember you still want them to have a positive experience while visiting your site. You are just providing a way for them to express their own opinions by commenting.

1. Add a call-to-action at the end of each blog post

People on the web tend to come and go quickly. Remind them to take action before they move away from your blog. People don’t always think of it themselves. Close each post with the action that you want your readers to take. This call-to-action could be a question that you want your readers to answer, or maybe you just want them to comment on what you wrote. The clearer your call-to-action, the more likely your visitors will post a comment. The call-to-action should be directly related to the content in your post.

3. When someone comments on your blog, thank the person

When people take the time to do something, they love to be recognized. Let them know their comment is valuable to you. Write a comment back to them, if appropriate. Answer any of their questions. At the very least, thank them for the comment. When you interact with your visitors, you are showing that you are reading the comments. They will be more likely to comment again.

4. Add links to your posts

The more engaged you can get your visitors, the more likely they will be to comment. A simple way to encourage people to interact more and spend more time on your site is to add clickable links within your posts. After you are done writing your post, look through it. Add links to related blog posts or additional resources, where appropriate. The links will encourage your visitors to spend more time on your site and help to keep your visitors engaged. The more time they spend on your site, the more often they will think to post a comment.

Commenting on a blog requires a shift in the brain. When people are reading, they become more passive. The idea is to keep your visitors engaged and taking action. Not only will this interactivity help to encourage more comments on your blog, but also your visitors will be more likely to remember your site. The more often they visit, the more likely they will be to comment during their visits.
